Because the Comédie-Française is in constant renewal, the Troupe embarked on a new “Cyrano de Bergerac” in 2024, six years after the last performance of Denis Podalydès' staging, eighty-five years after Pierre Dux's, and almost one hundred and thirty years after it was written.

Starring Laurent Lafitte role (recently seen in The Count of Monte-Cristo) in the title role, this production, directed by Emmanuel Daumas, sold out at the Salle Richelieu, the Comédie-Française main stage.

The story of Cyrano, as adept with a sword as he is with words - lending his pen to Christian to seduce Roxane, with whom he is secretly in love - unfolds in a unique set that changes with each of the five acts. In a dreamlike setting, this heroic comedy, a historical drama with romantic overtones, lays bare the humanity of a hero who, even in death, lived for panache. Cyrano is a troublemaker but also idealistic and held back by self-loathing and a fear of reality. This is why he chooses Christian's beauty as an avatar, notes Emmanuel Daumas, who quotes Marcel Proust to evoke Cyrano's dream: "It's better to dream your life than live it, although living it is still dreaming it”.
